we, the children of colonizers, are cursed. it is a quiet curse. it does not strike us down immediately. it does not make its presence known. it sits in the shadows of our cities, of our homes, of our minds. it eats away at everything we build. it taints our dreams; mocks our hopes. this subtle curse is everywhere around us, yet, we do not see it. in the name of progress we sought to create cities - now we are imprisoned in them and cannot escape. in the name of prosperity we sought to plunder the land of its beauty - now we poison ourselves with water we cannot drink and air that is toxic. in the name of civilization we sought to assimilate and eradicate those who belonged - now we are strangers decaying with no home. we are cursed to consume. we are cursed to pay rent and taxes. we are cursed to live in the civilized dystopia that we created. one day, perhaps, the mercy of annihilation will be bestowed upon us. until then, however, we remain, and deserve to be, cursed.
